Bundle business and auto insurance
A business weighing standalone auto against a bundled business policy should first check where its vehicles sit, because ISO's businessowners form excludes owned autos. BP 00 03 08 24 excludes injury or damage from any auto "owned or operated by or rented or loaned to any insured" and leaves registered vehicles out of covered property, so owned vehicles go on a business auto form, alone or as a coverage part of a package policy. What a BOP can add is ISO's BP 04 04 hired and non-owned auto liability: liability only and excess over primary insurance. Compare which vehicles each policy covers, which limit pays, whether it pays first or second, and who counts as an insured.
Does a BOP cover the vehicles my business owns?
ISO's businessowners form, BP 00 03 08 24, does not cover vehicles the business owns, for liability or for damage. Its liability section excludes injury or damage arising from any auto "owned or operated by or rented or loaned to any insured," and its property section says covered property does not include "automobiles, motortrucks and other vehicles subject to motor vehicle registration." ISO's general liability form, CG 00 01 12 25, carries the same auto exclusion word for word, so a general liability policy bundled with property coverage leaves the same gap.
BP 00 03 08 24 leaves owned vehicles to a business auto form, written alone or as the auto coverage part of a package policy. In Utah that auto coverage carries what Utah Code 31A-22-302 requires of every policy bought to meet the owner's security requirement: motor vehicle liability, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage unless affirmatively waived, and personal injury protection, which trailers and semitrailers do not need. Utah Code 31A-22-304 sets the liability floor, on policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025, at $30,000 per person, $65,000 for two or more persons in one accident and $25,000 for property damage, or $90,000 in any one accident as a single limit.
What is the difference between a BOP and a commercial package policy?
ISO's businessowners coverage form, BP 00 03, covers property and liability together; a commercial package policy joins separate coverage forms in one policy. BP 00 03 prints a single Section III of "Common Policy Conditions" that applies to both its property section and its liability section, and a carrier's BOP may use its own form rather than ISO's. A commercial package policy is one policy made of separate coverage parts under ISO's Common Policy Conditions, IL 00 17 11 98, which open: "All Coverage Parts included in this policy are subject to the following conditions."
ISO writes auto as a coverage part of its own: its Calculation of Premium endorsement, IL 00 03 09 08, names a Commercial Automobile Coverage Part among the coverage parts it modifies, beside the Commercial General Liability Coverage Part. With BP 00 03 excluding owned autos, ISO's forms allow three arrangements:
- Owned vehicles on a commercial automobile coverage part inside a package policy, under the package's IL 00 17 conditions
- A BOP and a separate business auto policy, from one insurer or two
- A BOP with BP 04 04 hired and non-owned auto liability and no owned-auto coverage, which leaves any vehicle the business owns uncovered, since BP 00 03 excludes owned autos
Can I add auto coverage to my BOP?
A BOP can add hired and non-owned auto liability through ISO endorsement BP 04 04 01 10, and only for the parts with a premium shown. The endorsement says "Insurance is provided only for those coverages for which a specific premium charge is shown in the Declarations or in the Schedule," and its schedule has two lines: Hired Auto Liability, for a hired auto used "by you or your 'employees' in the course of your business," and Non-owned Auto Liability, for any non-owned auto used in the business "by any person."
BP 04 04 prints three limits on what it adds, and the BOP form's limit clause adds a fourth:
- Excess (BP 04 04): "This insurance is excess over any primary insurance covering the 'hired auto' or 'non-owned auto'."
- Liability only (BP 04 04): it excludes property damage to property "owned or being transported by, or rented or loaned to the insured," so damage to a rented vehicle is not paid.
- Narrow insureds (BP 04 04): partners, executive officers and employees are insureds for a non-owned auto "only while such 'non-owned auto' is being used in your business," and a partner or executive officer is never an insured for an auto their own household owns.
- The BOP's limit (BP 00 03): BP 04 04 applies the BOP's own Business Liability coverage, and BP 00 03 D.2 caps all bodily injury and property damage from one occurrence under that coverage at the Liability and Medical Expenses limit, with an aggregate of twice that limit under D.4.b.
How do you set up a BOP and a commercial auto policy together?
A business with owned vehicles and a BOP puts the vehicles on a business auto form and decides which policy carries hired and non-owned liability. CA 00 01 11 20 writes hired autos as symbol 8 and non-owned autos as symbol 9.
Read the BOP declarations before adding symbols 8 and 9 to the auto policy: a BP 04 04 line with a premium beside it already buys hired or non-owned liability under the BOP's Business Liability coverage and its Liability and Medical Expenses limit. On the auto policy, the same claims fall under the Covered Autos Liability limit for each accident, which CA 00 01 II.C sets. Damage to a rented vehicle is covered by Hired Auto Physical Damage Coverage when the auto policy includes it, and BP 04 04 excludes property rented or loaned to the insured.
What do you send to compare a bundled policy with a standalone auto quote?
To compare a bundled policy with a standalone auto quote, send the current declarations and the vehicle and driver list below. Text them to Redoubt; the reply is a conversation that says what can be bound now, what needs the carrier, and what to send back.
- The current BOP or package declarations, showing any hired and non-owned auto lines and their premiums
- The current auto declarations page, or the dates of prior auto coverage
- Each vehicle and trailer: year, make, model, body type and value, with the VIN if you have it
- Every driver: name, date of birth, licence number and class
- The USDOT or MC number, if the business has one
- A paragraph on what the business does and what the vehicles carry, and the date auto coverage has to start
Does a BOP cover the business's own property while it is in transit?
A BOP covers the business's own property in transit only through an extension. ISO's BP 00 03 08 24 says the insured "may extend" property coverage to covered property "in the course of transit," up to $10,000 unless the declarations show a higher Personal Property Off-premises limit, and the extension leaves out money, securities, valuable papers and records, and accounts receivable.
Is an LLC member's own car a non-owned auto on a BOP?
BP 04 04 01 10 names no LLC members in its non-owned auto definition. It counts autos owned by employees, partners, executive officers and their households, while CA 00 01 11 20's symbol 9 names members of a limited liability company outright. Ask the insurer how its BOP endorsement reads.
