Employees drive their own cars for the business and the owner wants to know who pays

Hired and non-owned auto insurance

Hired and non-owned auto (HNOA) is bought as an add-on to a policy you carry: symbols 8 and 9 on a business auto policy, ISO endorsement BP 04 04 on a businessowners policy, or a carrier's own endorsement on general liability. Progressive says a stand-alone HNOA policy exists but is rare. No primary source we found publishes an average premium; ERGO NEXT says its general liability with HNOA starts at $28 a month. The AmTrust and Admiral applications ask your rental spend, who drives their own cars for work, and five years of claims. It is liability for your business, excess over the vehicle's own insurance, and Progressive and ERGO NEXT say it does not pay to repair the vehicle.

Is hired and non-owned auto a stand-alone policy or an endorsement?

Progressive says it is usually an endorsement: "Yes, but it's rare. HNOA coverage is usually added as an endorsement to a commercial auto, general liability, or BOP." Which policy it goes on follows from what you already carry.

A business with its own vehicles adds it to the business auto policy. Travelers says "Commercial auto policies don’t automatically cover vehicles you don't own," and the ISO business auto form covers only the autos whose symbols are "entered next to a coverage on the Declarations," so check that page before buying. State Farm adds that vehicles rented for long-term business use "should be insured on a business or commercial auto policy."

A business with no vehicles adds it to the BOP or general liability policy. On a BOP, BP 04 04 applies only where "a specific premium charge is shown in the Declarations or in the Schedule." ISO's general liability form excludes autos "owned or operated by or rented or loaned to any insured," so HNOA on a GL policy is the carrier's own add-on, and ERGO NEXT sells it only that way.

How much does hired and non-owned auto insurance cost?

We found no primary source publishing an average HNOA premium. Of the five carrier pages this page cites, read on October 3, 2026, only ERGO NEXT prints a price that includes HNOA: general liability with HNOA "Starts at $28/month," based on existing premiums of active policies as of April 1, 2026. That is a general liability policy with HNOA added, not HNOA alone.

The others name what moves the price. The Hartford says "The annual amount you spend on renting vehicles can affect what you pay for non-owned auto coverage." ERGO NEXT lists how often you drive for work, vehicle types, the limits you choose, your state and your claims history. State Farm says "Prices are based on rating plans that may vary by state."

Progressive sets eligibility before price: its hired auto is "usually only available to businesses that spend less than $5,000 annually on rental cars," and non-owned "may be an option if fewer than 10 employees use their own vehicles for work." Any first number is an estimate. The ISO business auto form bases the premium on "the exposures you told us you would have" and recomputes it at audit, and AmTrust heads its hired and non-owned sections "Coverage Subject to Audit."

Which insurance companies sell hired and non-owned auto?

Some sell it online and some only through agents, and one large carrier's page sends buyers elsewhere. Each line is the company's own page or application, read on October 3, 2026.

What does a hired and non-owned auto application ask?

Exposure and driver controls. AmTrust's application "must be signed and dated by an owner, officer or partner." It asks whether you own autos and already carry an auto liability policy for them, offers limits from $100,000 to $1,000,000, and asks your estimated rental cost, your employee count, how far non-owned autos may be driven, and whether you "Require evidence of auto insurance from employees or volunteers using personal autos?"

Admiral asks the "estimated annual cost of Hired Autos," how non-owned autos are used (errands, sales calls, cargo, product delivery, passengers), trips per day, and whether you "Obtain and review MVR’s on all drivers at least annually." Both ask about five years of claims in autos you did not own.

The agent signs too: AmTrust's producing agency declares the application was "complete and personally signed by the applicant." Answer from records, not memory: card statements for rentals, payroll for headcount, and the employee insurance proof you actually hold.

Who needs hired and non-owned auto coverage?

A business whose people drive for it in vehicles it does not own. Progressive lists: "Your employees use personal cars for company work. You rent, lease, or borrow vehicles for business use. You operate your business without company-owned vehicles but still require transportation." Travelers singles out delivery: "restaurants making deliveries have a greater HNOA exposure and more risk."

The other reason to buy it is a contract. Southern Utah University's February 2026 requirements, for vendors who will drive on its property, call for auto liability of "not less than $1,000,000 for bodily injury and property damage, including owned, hired and non-owned vehicle coverage." Kearns Improvement District's 2020 request for qualifications told contractors on a sewer project that their auto liability "shall cover owned, hired and non-owned vehicles." Whether HNOA alone meets a clause like that, for a business that owns no vehicles, is the holder's call.

Can a client be an additional insured on hired and non-owned auto?

Under the ISO forms, for liability that arises from what an insured did. The business auto form already insures "Anyone liable for the conduct of an 'insured' described above but only to the extent of that liability," and endorsement CA 20 48 schedules a named party on the same terms. On a BOP, BP 04 04 insures another person or organization "only for their liability because of acts or omissions of an insured." Whether a general liability add-on does the same depends on the carrier's endorsement.

Holders write the demand broadly. Kearns Improvement District's RFQ said "All liability insurance policies for the project shall include an endorsement naming the OWNER, ARCHITECT AND ENGINEER as additional insureds." Send the contract clause and the exact legal name with the application, so the carrier can say which endorsement answers it.

Frequently asked questions

Does hired and non-owned auto include uninsured motorist coverage?

Not on a BOP: BP 04 04 adds only bodily injury and property damage liability. On a business auto policy, CA 99 10 can schedule a named person with uninsured motorists limits for cars he or she does not own; ask the carrier what its state uninsured motorists endorsement does for hired autos.

What is named non-owned auto coverage?

On a business auto policy it is CA 99 10, Drive Other Car Coverage, Broadened Coverage for Named Individuals. It makes any auto you don't own, hire or borrow a covered auto while a named individual or resident spouse drives it, except autos their household owns. Ask about it when an owner or officer has no car of their own.

Does non-owned auto cover a truck?

Only if the carrier agrees. AmTrust asks whether non-owned autos will be anything other than a car, van or pickup, and Admiral asks for counts of trucks and buses. A start-up mover told Redoubt in September 2026 it would rent Penske 16-ft box trucks job by job. When the renter supplies its own coverage, Penske's coverage page accepts "Any auto or hired autos" and rejects non-owned autos, so symbol 1 or symbol 8 satisfies it and symbol 9 does not.
