Seasonal commercial truck insurance
A business with seasonal trucks keeps them on the policy and changes coverage by endorsement; ISO's CA 00 01 and IL 00 17 contain no off-season pause. ISO's Suspension Of Insurance endorsement, CA 02 40 10 13, stops the coverages checked in its schedule on the listed trucks and refunds premium after at least 30 consecutive days; CA 02 38 10 13 restores them from its own effective date. Utah Code 41-12a-301 requires owner's security whenever a truck is operated on a highway, and 49 CFR 387.7(b)(1) keeps a filed carrier's policy and MCS-90 in effect continuously until cancelled on 35 days' notice.
Can you pause commercial truck insurance for the off season?
ISO's CA 00 01 11 20 business auto form and IL 00 17 11 98 common conditions contain no off-season pause; a seasonal truck's coverage changes only by endorsement. IL 00 17 says the first named insured may change the policy's terms "with our consent" and that the terms "can be amended or waived only by endorsement issued by us and made a part of this policy." A call saying the truck is parked changes no coverage until that endorsement is issued.
ISO's CA 00 01 11 20 sets the premium from what the business reports: "The estimated premium for this Coverage Form is based on the exposures you told us you would have when this Policy began."
Does a truck need insurance while it is parked for the season?
Utah Code 41-12a-301(2)(a) requires owner's or operator's security whenever a seasonal truck is operated on a highway; physical damage coverage pays for loss to the parked truck. Utah Code 41-12a-301(2)(a), effective May 6, 2026, says every resident owner "shall maintain owner's or operator's security in effect at any time that the motor vehicle is operated on a highway or on a quasi-public road or parking area within the state." Utah Code 41-12a-803(5)(b) has the state's database "compare all current motor vehicle and motorboat registrations against the database," and 41-12a-804(1) has the Motor Vehicle Division direct its designated agent to send notice when a registered vehicle "is not insured for three consecutive months," and the owner then has 15 days to show proof of security or of an exemption.
A parked truck's own losses fall under the physical damage section of ISO's CA 00 01 11 20. Comprehensive Coverage pays for loss to a covered auto "From any cause except" its collision with another object or its overturn; Specified Causes Of Loss Coverage lists fire, lightning or explosion, theft, windstorm, hail or earthquake, flood, and mischief or vandalism. A truck taken off the schedule has neither: under symbol 7 the covered autos are "Only those "autos" described in Item Three of the Declarations for which a premium charge is shown."
What should you check before changing coverage on a seasonal truck?
Before changing a seasonal truck's coverage, check whether the policy carries a federal filing and whether a customer contract requires coverage for its whole term.
A truck run under MC authority with a federal insurance filing is backed by an MCS-90 endorsement that reaches past the policy's schedule. The MCS-90 text printed in 49 CFR 387.15 has the insurer pay a final judgment for public liability on vehicles subject to the federal requirements "regardless of whether or not each motor vehicle is specifically described in the policy," and 49 CFR 387.7(b)(1) says such policies and endorsements "shall remain in effect continuously until terminated," with cancellation on 35 days' written notice. A CA 02 40 suspension cannot suspend the liability and MCS-90 that 387.7(b)(1) keeps in effect until the policy is cancelled on that 35 days' notice.
FMCSA treats a seasonal operation as a registration question too. Its Motus page says "Voluntarily suspend operating authority in Motus if you are a seasonal carrier" and that the authority can be reinstated "up to one year after the suspension date." That FMCSA page, read October 12, 2026, says nothing about what a voluntary suspension does to the insurance filing, so settle the filing with the insurer before the authority changes.
Ogden City's snow removal request for proposals of September 12, 2024 treats a failure to maintain coverage as a material breach of contract. The request says "Failure to maintain or renew coverage or to provide evidence of renewal will be treated by City as a material breach of contract." Read each account's insurance clause for the period it covers before changing coverage on the trucks that serve it.
What is lay-up or comprehensive-only coverage on a commercial truck?
ISO's CA 02 40 10 13 suspends listed coverages from a stated date, and CA 02 38 10 13 reinstates them from its own effective date. A suspension of insurance is an endorsement that stops the coverages checked in its schedule, on the trucks it names, from a stated date. CA 02 40 says "Except for maintaining or testing covered "autos" on your property, the coverages and "autos" indicated in this endorsement are suspended as of the Endorsement Effective Date indicated in the Schedule."
The CA 02 40 schedule prints boxes for Covered Autos Liability, Auto Medical Payments, Uninsured Motorists, Underinsured Motorists and Collision, plus blank lines for other auto coverages, each applied to all covered autos, all owned autos or the autos listed. Comprehensive has no printed box; any coverage beyond the printed lines is named on an Other Auto Coverage line. Paragraph B sets the refund: "If you suspended coverage for at least 30 consecutive days, you will be entitled to a refund of premium."
CA 02 40 cannot suspend the liability and MCS-90 that 49 CFR 387.7(b)(1) keeps in effect on a truck under a federal filing. That section says the filed policy and its endorsements "shall remain in effect continuously until terminated," with cancellation on 35 days' written notice. For other trucks CA 02 40 is optional: a policy carries it only when the insurer attaches it, and a carrier may use its own suspension wording or offer none.
Which insurance arrangement fits trucks used only part of the year?
Trucks used only part of the year fit one of three arrangements, chosen by what has to stay covered while they sit and how they return.
Reinstatement under ISO's forms is dated, not automatic. CA 02 38 10 13 says the coverages "which you have previously suspended are reinstated as of the effective date of this endorsement," and CA 02 40 10 13 keeps them suspended "until the Reinstatement Effective Date if provided in the Schedule or, if no date is provided, the end of the policy period." A truck driven before the reinstatement date runs without the suspended coverages, so put the return date in the CA 02 40 schedule when coverage is suspended.
On a truck under a federal filing, CA 02 40 cannot suspend the liability and MCS-90 that 49 CFR 387.7(b)(1) keeps in effect continuously until cancelled on 35 days' written notice. For a cancellation the business asks for, ISO's IL 00 17 11 98 says "If the first Named Insured cancels, the refund may be less than pro rata," and Utah Code 41-12a-301 still requires security before the truck is driven again.
| Arrangement | While the truck is parked | When the truck runs again |
|---|---|---|
| Keep every coverage all year | Every coverage on the declarations stays in force; the premium is priced on the exposures reported (CA 00 01) | Nothing to change; the truck is covered the day it moves |
| Suspend chosen coverages (CA 02 40 10 13); it cannot suspend the liability and MCS-90 that 49 CFR 387.7(b)(1) keeps in effect on a filed truck | Coverages not checked in the schedule stay in force; a refund is due after 30 consecutive days | Covered again from the CA 02 38 effective date or the reinstatement date set in the CA 02 40 schedule |
| Cancel the policy | The policy ends; a refund the first named insured asks for may be less than pro rata (IL 00 17) | A policy in force before driving (Utah 41-12a-301); three months uninsured draws a Utah notice (41-12a-804) |
What do you send to insure seasonal trucks, and what happens next?
Redoubt sets up seasonal trucks from one list: which trucks run when, where they sit off season, the vehicles, the drivers and the registration numbers. Text the list below; the first reply is a conversation about which coverages each truck needs in season and out, and what the insurer will put in writing.
- Which trucks run seasonally, and the months each one runs and sits
- Where each truck is stored off season, with the address
- Each vehicle and trailer: year, make, model, body type and value, with the VIN
- Your USDOT number, and the MC or docket number if you have one, with the vehicle and driver counts on your SAFER record
- Every driver: name, date of birth, licence number and class
- What the business does, any customer contract's insurance clause, and the date coverage has to start or change
Can a personal pickup plow snow for the winter on a personal auto policy?
The Utah Insurance Department lists "Snowplowing service" among the uses where an owner may need a commercial auto policy or a personal policy endorsed for the business use, and says to discuss any business use with your agent.
Is there part-time commercial auto insurance?
ISO's CA 00 01 11 20 bases the estimated premium on "the exposures you told us you would have when this Policy began" and computes the final premium from actual exposures; ISO's CA 02 40 suspends listed coverages by date where the insurer attaches it.
Does a registered farm truck get Utah's uninsured-vehicle notices?
Not if it qualifies. Utah Code 41-12a-804(7) exempts from those notices a farm truck that meets the farm truck definition in Utah Code 41-1a-102 and is registered as a farm truck, and Utah Code 41-12a-301 still requires security whenever the truck is operated on a highway.
