A vehicle was sold, totalled, parked for the season or moved, and the policy has to follow it

Garaging address insurance

A business whose vehicles sit in a yard, on the street or at customer sites answers the garaging question vehicle by vehicle and corrects it after a move. RLI's NEMT submission list asks for each vehicle's garaging city and state, and Merchants' snowplowing questionnaire MU 7996 02 24 asks a garaging address for each piece of equipment. Commonwealth Automobile Reinsurers' Massachusetts manual, effective March 1, 2026, rates by the city or town where a vehicle is principally garaged. Utah Code 31A-21-105(4) treats a representation left uncorrected for more than a reasonable time after circumstances change as a misrepresentation.

What is a garaging address for insurance?

A garaging address is the answer to where a vehicle is principally garaged, the phrase ISO's business auto form and the Massachusetts CAR rating manual both use. Commonwealth Automobile Reinsurers' Commercial Automobile Insurance Manual, the Massachusetts residual market's rules effective March 1, 2026, says in Rule 21 that "The proper rate schedules and rules are those effective in the city or town where the automobile is principally garaged," and its Rule 52 says to "Determine radius on a straight line from the street address of the automobile’s principal garaging." The CAR manual binds only the Massachusetts residual market; it is quoted as one published rating manual, not as how every insurer rates.

ISO's business auto form, CA 00 01 11 20, uses the same place to describe covered autos. Covered auto symbol 5 reaches owned autos "required to have no-fault benefits in the state where they are licensed or principally garaged," and symbol 6 reaches owned autos that "because of the law in the state where they are licensed or principally garaged are required to have and cannot reject Uninsured Motorists Coverage." Both symbols name the licensing state and the garaging state together.

Does the garaging address matter, and what if it is wrong?

A garaging address that does not match where the vehicle is kept can be a misrepresentation, and Utah law says when one changes what the insurer owes. Utah Code 31A-21-105(2), as in force on October 12, 2026, says a misrepresentation affects the insurer's obligations when "the insurer relies on it and it is either material or is made with intent to deceive" or when "the fact misrepresented or falsely warranted contributes to the loss."

ISO's CA 00 01 11 20 goes further when the wrong answer is deliberate. Its Concealment, Misrepresentation Or Fraud condition says the coverage form "is also void if you or any other "insured", at any time, intentionally conceals or misrepresents a material fact concerning" the coverage form, the covered auto, the insured's interest in the auto, or a claim. The garaging answer is where the vehicles are actually kept, not an address picked for its rate.

Our vehicles sit in a yard, on the street or at customer sites. Which address do we give?

Redoubt asks a business with vehicles in a yard, on a street or at customer sites where each vehicle is kept overnight, one vehicle at a time. Published applications ask the same question per vehicle in their own fields: RLI's NEMT submission list, read October 12, 2026, wants a vehicle schedule "including licensing state, garaging city and state, year, make, model and VIN," and Merchants' snowplowing questionnaire MU 7996 02 24 prints a "Garaging Address" column beside each piece of snow removal equipment. Each insurer's own application decides the fields; the answer in every one is where the vehicle is kept.

ISO's CA 00 01 11 20 draws no line between a yard, a street and a customer site: its Comprehensive Coverage pays for loss to a covered auto "From any cause except" collision with another object or overturn, and the grant names no parking condition. None of the sources quoted in this section says how an insurer rates a street against a yard; ask the insurer quoting the vehicles.

What Redoubt asks for, by where the vehicle is kept
Where the vehicle is kept when not workingWhat Redoubt asks for
Company yard or shop lotThe yard's street address, which vehicles stay there, and the yard lease if the yard is not the address on the USDOT record
Driver's home, in a driveway or on the streetThe street address and which driver takes which vehicle home
Customer site for the length of a jobThe site, and how long the vehicle stays there

How do you change the garaging address on a commercial auto policy?

Under ISO's IL 00 17 11 98 conditions, a garaging change becomes part of the policy only by an endorsement the insurer issues, so ask the insurer for one. IL 00 17 11 98 says "The first Named Insured shown in the Declarations is authorized to make changes in the terms of this policy with our consent" and "This policy's terms can be amended or waived only by endorsement issued by us and made a part of this policy." A carrier's own conditions apply where its policy does not carry IL 00 17.

Neither IL 00 17 11 98 nor CA 00 01 11 20 prints a deadline for reporting a garaging change. Utah Code 31A-21-105(4), as in force on October 12, 2026, calls a representation left uncorrected for more than a reasonable time a misrepresentation and sets no number of days: "Failure to correct within a reasonable time any representation that becomes incorrect because of changes in circumstances is misrepresentation, not nondisclosure." CAR's manual says, for the Massachusetts residual market, "No adjustment of the premium shall be made by reason of a change in the place of principal garaging during the policy period unless such change is permanent." A move across a state line also changes the garaging state that symbols 5 and 6 of CA 00 01 11 20 name.

Two public records hold the owner's address, not the garaging address, and each has its own deadline. Utah Code 41-1a-218(1), effective May 12, 2015, gives a registered owner who "moves from the address named in the application" 10 days to notify the Motor Vehicle Division of the old and new addresses, and 41-1a-218(2) makes a missed notice an infraction. A motor carrier whose company address changes files an updated MCS-150, the registration form 49 CFR 390.19T(a)(1) requires, within 30 days, FMCSA's FAQ last updated May 20, 2023 says. A garaging move that leaves both of those addresses unchanged triggers neither deadline.

What do you send to quote or update a garaging address, and what happens next?

Redoubt handles a garaging question from one list: where each vehicle is kept, what is moving, the USDOT number and the current policy. Send the list below by text or email; the first reply is a conversation about which address each vehicle belongs at and what the insurer needs to change or rate.

  • Business legal name, entity type and primary business address
  • Where each vehicle is kept overnight, yard, driver's home, street or customer site, with the street address
  • Proof of garaging, such as the yard lease, where the vehicles are kept somewhere other than the address on the USDOT record
  • Each vehicle and trailer: year, make, model, body type, value and VIN
  • Every driver: name, date of birth and licence number
  • USDOT number, and the MC or docket number if any, with the vehicle and driver counts the USDOT record shows
  • For a move: the old and new garaging addresses and the move date
  • Which vehicles move and which stay
  • The updated MCS-150 or the new address on the USDOT record, if the business address changed
  • The current declarations page, or the dates of prior coverage, and the date the change or new policy has to start

Frequently asked questions

Is the garaging address the same as the mailing address?

They are separate answers. ISO's IL 00 17 11 98 sends notice of cancellation to "the first Named Insured's last mailing address known to us," while the CAR manual's Rule 21, effective March 1, 2026, rates by the city or town where the vehicle is principally garaged. Give both on the application.

Does parking on the street cost more than parking in a yard?

The CAR manual's rules set rates by city or town (Rule 21) and radius from the garaging street address (Rule 52), effective March 1, 2026; neither names street parking. Ask the insurer quoting the vehicles how its own manual treats it.
