Snow plow insurance cost

Insureon says, on a page updated September 30, 2026, that snow removal contractors pay $132 a month for general liability at $1 million per occurrence, and that landscaping companies including snow removal contractors pay $299 a month for commercial auto. Insurance Canopy says, on a page last modified April 22, 2026, that its residential snow and ice endorsement starts at $217 a month, combined with a $33.75 landscaping policy. None of the five sellers we checked publishes one number for a whole plow operation; Insureon prices general liability, commercial auto, workers' compensation and umbrella separately. Insureon and Progressive say the price moves with the services you sell, your limits, vehicles, drivers, employees and claims history.

What do insurers publish for snow plow insurance cost?

Two sellers publish dated numbers, and neither prices a whole plow operation. Insureon's snow and ice removal cost page, updated September 30, 2026, gives general liability for "Snow removal contractors and companies" at $132 a month on a $1 million per occurrence, $2 million aggregate policy. Its commercial auto and workers' compensation figures cover landscaping companies "including snow removal contractors," so mowing-only accounts are mixed in. Insureon's page describes its figures both as averages and as the median cost of policies for applicants, and its footer says they come from customers who bought through Insureon; it says most of those customers have fewer than five employees and five years or less in business.

Insurance Canopy sells snow as an add-on to its landscaping liability policy. On a page last modified April 22, 2026, it says the endorsement "starts at $217/mo. with a $300,000 sublimit," combined with landscaping insurance at $33.75 a month; the page does not say whether the $217 includes the $33.75.

Progressive, ERGO NEXT and The Hartford print no figure; Progressive says the cost "depends on the specific aspects of your business." On the five pages we checked on October 3, 2026, we found no Utah figure and no price for a plow truck alone.

What policies make up the price of snow plow insurance?

The plow truck is an auto. The ISO business auto form, CA 00 01, takes snow equipment out of its "mobile equipment" definition: a self-propelled vehicle with permanently attached equipment designed primarily for snow removal is treated as an auto. The form treats it as an auto, so the plow truck's liability is a commercial auto question. Progressive describes its plow auto policy as "liability and physical damage coverage for your work vehicles and permanently attached plow equipment."

The CGL form, CG 00 01, defines the products-completed operations hazard to include injury and damage away from your premises arising out of your work, except work not yet completed, and gives it its own aggregate limit. Whether a slip on a lot you plowed falls inside it depends on the policy and the contract. Ogden City's RFP names the coverage: it requires general liability that includes contractual liability and "products/completed operations liability."

For employees, Ogden asks for workers' compensation at Utah's statutory limits plus $1,000,000 employers' liability. Insureon says an umbrella extends the general liability limits and points snow businesses that work commercial lots toward one.

Why is snow plowing insurance so expensive?

Insureon says de-icing, salting and plowing large commercial parking lots "will lead to more costly premiums" than residential-only driveways. Atlantic Casualty's snow and ice supplemental application asks for that mix in detail, split to a total of 100% across categories from residential driveways and small retail lots to hospitals, airports, large retail stores and state highways.

Contract terms add cost. Ogden's RFP names the city as an additional insured, makes the city's own insurance "in excess of Contractor's insurance," and says "The cost of such insurance shall be included in Contractor’s proposal." Insureon says general liability price depends in part on "any subcontractors or additional insured endorsements." Merchants Insurance Group's snowplowing questionnaire asks whether every customer contract includes additional insured status, indemnity and a hold harmless agreement.

Three of the sellers we checked limit how they take snow on. Atlantic Casualty's application says it "does not write monoline Snow/Ice Removal Operations," so it writes snow only alongside other work. The Hartford does not sell snow plow coverage online and refers buyers to a local agency or Tivly. Insurance Canopy's endorsement stops at residential properties.

How do the limits in a snow contract change the price?

They set the floor. Utah Code 31A-22-304 sets auto liability at 30/65/25, or a $90,000 single limit, for a policy issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025. Ogden City's snow removal RFP asks for a "$1,000,000 combined single limit per accident" on owned, non-owned and hired autos, a $3,000,000 general liability minimum with $1,000,000 for each occurrence, and $1,000,000 employers' liability. Summit County Service Area #3, bidding its 2025-2026 road plowing, asks for one combined general and automobile liability line with combined single limits of $1,000,000 and $3,000,000 in the aggregate.

Insureon says higher limits and lower deductibles raise premium, while lower limits and a higher deductible keep it down. Ogden's RFP closes both doors: the limit is written into it, and any deductible "must be declared to and approved by the City," which may have the insurer reduce or eliminate it. Where the base policies stop short, an umbrella fills the gap; Insureon says, updated September 30, 2026, that its customers pay $75 a month for each $1 million.

Two Utah public owners ask for different shapes of the same $1,000,000, so read each account's insurance exhibit before you price the bid; its written requirement is what counts.

Is there cheap snow plow insurance?

There are cheap policies; the question is whether they cover the work you signed. ERGO NEXT's lowest-price package for snow plowing sets general liability at $100,000 per occurrence, on its page modified September 3, 2026: a tenth of Ogden's $1,000,000 per occurrence, and Summit County's combined general and auto line is $1,000,000. Insurance Canopy's endorsement, from $217 a month on its April 22, 2026 page, carries a $300,000 sublimit and does not cover commercial snow contracts. Atlantic Casualty asks of the applicant's current auto policy, "Is snow and ice removal/plowing excluded?", so confirm yours does not. Compare quotes at the same limits, the same operations and the same additional insured wording, or the cheaper one may be a different product.

Some savings hold up. Progressive says seasonal comprehensive coverage on its plow auto policy "protects your vehicle during the off-season and is available in many states." Progressive's quote checklist, pulled October 3, 2026, says proof of continuous coverage on your current declarations page "could instantly save you up to 25 percent" on its commercial auto premium, and ERGO NEXT says on its September 3, 2026 page that you can save up to 10% by bundling two or more of its policies. Each is that company's statement about its own pricing.

How do I get a snow removal insurance quote?

Start before you bid, not after you win. Ogden's RFP asks proposers to include "a letter from an insurance company stating that the proposer can qualify for the required insurance liability," so the market has to see the contract's insurance terms before the proposal goes in. Send the account's insurance exhibit with the request and the quote is built to it.

Then answer what the snow markets ask. Merchants' monoline auto snowplowing questionnaire asks years plowing, prior snow losses, number of plows, your residential and commercial split, whether you plow public streets or rake roofs, and every commercial account with its parking-space count. Atlantic Casualty asks for your three largest commercial clients, whether you use subcontractors, and snow or ice losses for the past five years. Progressive's commercial auto checklist asks for your declarations page, driver's license numbers, VINs, and the month and year of any accident or violation in the past three years.

Redoubt works from the same facts: pricing and carrier appetite depend on the operation, the people, the property, the contracts, the controls, the limits and the history, so we collect them before asking a market for a number.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy snow plow insurance just for the winter?

None of the sellers we checked publishes a winter-only plow policy. Progressive offers seasonal comprehensive on plow trucks for the off-season in many states, and ERGO NEXT says its policies can be paid monthly and cancelled at any time. The account still expects coverage for the whole contract term: Ogden treats a failure to maintain or renew coverage as a material breach.

Does adding a plow raise my commercial auto premium?

No seller we checked publishes a plow surcharge. Insureon lists higher-value items, snow plows among them, as raising premiums, and Progressive's physical damage coverage reaches permanently attached plow equipment, so list the plow and its value with the truck.
