The carrier non-renewed the commercial auto policy and a replacement is due

Did GEICO leave California?

No. GEICO is still licensed and selling in California: its companies wrote 10.87% of the state's private passenger auto premium in 2025, third among insurance groups. What changed is which GEICO company reports California commercial auto premium. Government Employees Insurance Company reported $27.0 million in 2019 and $0.8 million in 2023, then none in 2024 or 2025. GEICO General Insurance Company reported premium in its place, $35.2 million in 2025, though GEICO's own footnote still names Government Employees as a commercial auto underwriter. A GEICO commercial non-renewal in California ends a policy; it does not mean GEICO left the state.

Updated . Written by Andre Beukers, principal at Redoubt, a commercial insurance agency in Salt Lake City, not a government office.

Is GEICO still available in California?

Yes. The California Department of Insurance lists Government Employees Insurance Company, authorized in California since 1948, and GEICO General Insurance Company, authorized since 1978, each with a license status of "UNLIMITED-NORMAL" and automobile among its lines. A third company, GEICO Protection Insurance Company, was authorized on May 29, 2024, and wrote $468.7 million of California private passenger auto premium in 2025, its first year in the state's private passenger figures.

The department's 2025 market share data shows how much GEICO still writes. GEICO General alone wrote $4.75 billion of private passenger auto premium, 9.82% of the state total. The five GEICO companies in the Berkshire Hathaway group together wrote $5.26 billion, 10.87%, behind only the State Farm and Auto Club Enterprises groups.

GEICO still asks Californians for the business. Its California page says: "Visit our website, download our app, or call us at (800) 207-7847 to get started." Berkshire Hathaway's annual report for 2025 says the GEICO companies sell private passenger auto insurance "in all 50 states and the District of Columbia" and also sell insurance for commercial vehicles.

Did GEICO stop selling commercial auto insurance in California?

One GEICO company reports no California commercial auto premium after 2023. California's market share files count the premium each licensed insurer reports for the year. They show Government Employees Insurance Company writing $27.0 million of California commercial auto in 2019, then $19.5 million, $14.2 million, $3.5 million and $0.8 million in the four years after. In 2024 and 2025 it has no commercial auto row at all; the report leaves out companies that "had no written premium (reporting either zero premium or negative premium)." The figures do not say why, or whether policies were non-renewed, moved or simply not written.

GEICO General Insurance Company, which had no California commercial auto row from 2019 to 2022, reported $0.4 million in 2023, $15.1 million in 2024 and $35.2 million in 2025, 0.54% of the state's commercial auto premium and more than Government Employees reported in 2019. The rows show one company's premium falling away and another's rising; they do not show policies moving between them. GEICO's commercial page still says commercial auto "is underwritten by Government Employees Insurance Company," or provided through its agency, and that truck insurance "is underwritten by GEICO General Insurance"; it does not say which product the California premium is.

Does GEICO still have local agent offices in California?

Not that GEICO lists. Its agent finder lets you browse local GEICO agents by state, and the list goes from Arkansas straight to Colorado: 44 states and the District of Columbia, without California. The directory's California address, geico.com/insurance-agents/california/, answers with a permanent redirect to GEICO's home page, while the Utah and Nevada addresses load. Selling without local offices is still selling; the California page offers a quote online, in the app or by phone.

What should I do if GEICO non-renewed my commercial auto in California?

Start with the company name, because GEICO uses more than one. GEICO's commercial page says commercial auto "is underwritten by Government Employees Insurance Company, CA License 1348-2, or provided through GEICO Insurance Agency, LLC" with Berkshire Hathaway affiliates or non-affiliated insurers, and its business auto article says some coverage comes "under an arrangement with National Indemnity Company (NICO)." The insurer named on the letter, and on any offer that comes with it, tells you which of these you are dealing with.

Ask GEICO in writing which of those it is offering, if any, and get the new declarations page before you send a contractor or lender a certificate. Redoubt is an independent broker: "our loyalty is to you, not any single carrier."

Which insurance companies are leaving California?

The California pullbacks in these companies' own statements are home insurance. State Farm General Insurance Company, which State Farm calls its provider of homeowners insurance in California, stopped taking new applications, effective May 27, 2023, for "all business and personal lines property and casualty insurance," and said "This decision does not impact personal auto insurance." Allstate's annual report for 2025 says "We stopped writing new homeowners and condominium business in California in 2022."

Neither is a commercial auto exit. State Farm General has no row in the state's 2025 commercial auto data, while State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company wrote $151.3 million of California commercial auto that year.

The commercial auto market as a whole has fewer insurers and more premium. In 2019, 255 licensed companies reported California commercial auto premium; in 2025, 231 did, while the premium they wrote rose from $4.20 billion to $6.47 billion. Those counts cover licensed insurers only.

Are insurance companies pulling out of Florida?

Some have, from home and condominium insurance. Allstate's same report says that in Florida "we stopped writing new condominium business in 2022 and new homeowners business in 2023." Florida's Office of Insurance Regulation lists insurers that went into receivership, starting with United Property & Casualty Insurance Company; for another, Southern Fidelity, it says policies other than flood "are cancelled effective 12:01 a.m. on July 15, 2022."

The office also lists new authorizations: its new entities report through September 30, 2026 lists nine companies licensed as property and casualty insurers between February 2 and September 18, 2026. Neither list says which lines a company writes; what decides a work vehicle's renewal is the insurer named on its own policy.

Are insurance companies pulling out of Texas?

We found none announced. Our check of the headlines on the Texas Department of Insurance's news release lists for 2024 through September 2026 found no release about an insurer leaving the state. Its September 2026 summary of what it heard from Texans says "The top challenges Texans said they’re facing are affordability and claims handling."

Texas is publishing data instead. In September 2026 TDI launched a ZIP code tool showing why home insurers decline, cancel or do not renew, and says it "plans to expand the resource later this year with auto insurance insights." Its rate filing search "lets you see if your home or auto insurance company filed a rate change with TDI."

Frequently asked questions

Can I still buy GEICO car insurance in California by phone?

Yes. GEICO's California page lists (800) 207-7847 next to its website and app. What it does not list is a local California agent.

Did State Farm stop selling car insurance in California?

No. The 2023 pause applied to State Farm General, State Farm's home insurance company in California, and State Farm said it "does not impact personal auto insurance." State Farm's group wrote 13.83% of California private passenger auto premium in 2025, the most of any group.

Do these numbers say whether GEICO will quote my vans now?

No. Written premium shows what an insurer wrote last year. Whether GEICO General or anyone else will take your vehicles, drivers and garaging address this year is an underwriting answer that only a quote gives.

Do the California figures count every insurer?

No. The department labels its market share data "Licensed Companies Only" and heads its premium summary "LICENSED INSURERS," so premium written by an insurer that is not licensed in California is not in these figures.
