The renewal came in far higher and the owner wants to know why and what to do

Lower truck insurance

You lower truck insurance by changing what the insurer prices: pay the year in full, raise the physical damage deductible, state the truck at what it is worth today, share ELD or dashcam data with an insurer that rewards it, and keep experienced, clean drivers on the schedule. Progressive says most customers can save 10% or more when they pay their policy in full. What you cannot cut is the liability limit someone holds you to: $750,000 under 49 CFR 387.9 for for-hire interstate carriers of nonhazardous property at 10,001 lb GVWR and up, or a broker's higher figure.

Updated . Written by Andre Beukers, principal at Redoubt, a commercial insurance agency in Salt Lake City, not a government office.

What actually lowers a truck insurance premium?

Progressive's truck cost page lists the factors it rates on: authority, coverage requirements, cargo, operating radius, truck type and age, driving history and location. Some of those follow from what you haul and where. The table holds the ones an owner can change before the next renewal, and who says each one moves the price. Those are individual insurers' statements, not a market-wide rule, so ask the insurer on your renewal which of them it offers.

Does a higher deductible or a lower stated value save money?

Yes, on the physical damage part of the premium. Progressive's physical damage page says "Choosing a higher deductible is an easy way to lower the price of your insurance. Be sure you choose a deductible that you can afford to pay at any time."

The stated amount is the other half. Progressive defines it as "the price you'd ask a buyer to pay if you sold your car today," and says an insurer will "pay whichever is less" of the stated amount and actual cash value. Its example is a van stated at $50,000: the owner pays premium on $50,000 and collects the $35,000 actual cash value after a total loss. At renewal, ask whether each truck's stated amount still matches what it would sell for. A stated amount below actual cash value is the lesser figure, so it is what a total loss pays.

If the truck is financed or leased, read that contract first. Progressive notes physical damage "is usually required for trucks with an outstanding loan or lease"; if the lender caps the deductible, the cap is written there.

Can I lower my liability or cargo limits to save money?

Only down to the highest figure someone holds you to. Progressive says "Generally, the more coverage you need, the more your trucking insurance will cost," so a lower limit costs less, but the floor belongs to whoever wrote it.

For a for-hire carrier hauling nonhazardous property in interstate commerce at 10,001 lb GVWR or more, 49 CFR 387.9 sets $750,000 of public liability. A broker can ask for more: TQL's carrier FAQ lists "Minimum $1 million auto liability insurance" and "Minimum $100,000 cargo insurance policy," so a $750,000 policy meets the federal figure and not TQL's.

Before you lower a liability or cargo limit, read each broker's, shipper's and lender's own written figure. The highest one is your floor, and anything above it is the part you can choose to trim.

Do ELDs, dash cams or telematics lower truck insurance?

With some insurers, on their terms. Progressive's Smart Haul trades a discount for your ELD data: "At new business, customers who elect to enroll in Smart Haul with a preferred vendor ELD receive at least a 5% discount. But with an established safety record, some can save 15% or more." Progressive says "New truck customers who choose to enroll save an average of $1,261," a figure it bases on enrollment discounts offered to new customers from February to August 2025, and its footnote adds "Savings not guaranteed." It needs an ELD, a USDOT number and primary liability on a Progressive for-hire policy, and Progressive says your rate at each renewal "may go up or down based on these results."

Cover Whale makes the device a condition. Its guidelines say "Dashcam or ELD connection required for driver safety coaching and accurate claim dispute resolution," and list a "Safety Discount: Premium savings for safe driving based on verified performance."

Canal TestDrive prices liability on miles: "Only the auto liability coverage is charged on a per mile basis," with physical damage and cargo at a fixed premium. It is built for new ventures, with at least two years of CDL experience, a 2000 or newer truck, and up to two trucks under two years in business.

How much do drivers and violations change the price?

Even one ticket can, by Progressive's account. Its truck cost page says "Even a minor speeding ticket on a trucker's driving history can significantly increase your rate," and its Georgia page says "Insurers will typically review the past three years of driving history for all drivers on the policy when setting your rate." Take anyone who no longer drives for you off the schedule before renewal.

Experience is a gate as well as a price. Cover Whale asks for "2 years minimum driving experience with like vehicle," and Canal TestDrive for two years of CDL experience. On a Redoubt submission in October 2026, Cover Whale's answer on an owner whose CDL was four months old was "Cover Whale will not consider this driver." Ask your insurer where its line is before you hire.

Can I move my truck policy to a new agency before it renews?

Only inside the window the market on your policy accepts. One market, Homestate, told Redoubt in June 2026: "Homestate will only accept BOR requests 60 days from the expiration date, but no later than 7 calendar days from expiration." That is one market's broker-of-record window, as it gave it to Redoubt; ask the market on your policy for its own before you plan a move around a date.

Ask your current insurer for loss runs before you shop. On a Redoubt courier-van submission in August 2026, one market's list of open items included "Prior to binding, please provide 5 years of currently valued loss runs."

A name change is a separate risk. An owner-operator told Redoubt in September 2026 that after his insured name changed, "it made it look like I was a new carrier, and it made my rates go through the roof." That is his account of his own renewal, not an insurer's statement. Before a name or entity change, ask the insurer how it will treat your history.

What is the cheapest commercial truck insurance?

No single insurer, because each prices the truck in front of it. Canal's FAQ says "your policy’s characteristics determine the rate that is charged to the insured," which it says could include driving history, routes, operation type and garage location. The cheapest policy that works is the lowest quote that still meets every written requirement on the truck: the federal filing if you need one, each broker's minimums, the lender's physical damage terms.

Quotes only compare on the same facts. Georgia's insurance commissioner, writing for personal auto buyers, says "When asking for price quotations, it is crucial that you provide the same information to each agent or company." The same principle applies to a truck: the same limits, deductibles, stated values, drivers and radius on every quote. Redoubt's trucking page says it compares rates across its carrier network; that comparison holds only when every market saw the same submission.

What is the cheapest commercial truck insurance in Georgia?

No insurer or Georgia regulator we checked names one. Progressive's Georgia page prints two 2025 monthly averages for its own customers, "$260 for contractors and $276 for business auto customers," per power unit on new policies with no driver violations, and none for for-hire trucking. It says location moves the price inside the state: "It's common to pay more for commercial auto insurance in Atlanta than in a smaller city like Athens."

What Georgia sets for an intrastate for-hire carrier is a filing. The Georgia Department of Public Safety's GIMC instructions (a 2015 update still linked from its gamccd.net site) cover carriers running a vehicle of 10,001 lb or more inside the state, and for a for-hire carrier they list a Form E: "Have your insurance company (not your agent) file evidence of public liability and property damage insurance." Those instructions print no limit figure. An insurer that will not file a Form E is no choice at all for that carrier; Progressive says it offers Georgia state and federal filings.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drop physical damage on a paid-off truck?

FMCSA's financial responsibility rule does not make you carry it: the 49 CFR 387.9 schedule is titled "Schedule of Limits—Public Liability" and sets no physical damage figure. Dropping it is your call under FMCSA's rule; a lender, lessor, broker or shipper may still require it in writing. Without it, a total loss or theft is yours to pay.

Does leasing onto a carrier lower my insurance?

Progressive says "Leasing to a company is usually cheaper than working under your own authority," and that when you are leased, "they typically cover primary liability while under dispatch." It adds that you may still need non-truck or bobtail coverage to fill the gaps, "but your overall insurance costs are often lower."
