Walmart Spark insurance requirements

Walmart requires Spark drivers to carry at least the auto liability insurance their state requires, on every vehicle they use for Spark, and to keep proof of it uploaded in the app. The Spark Driver contract adds "any other insurance coverages appropriate for the Services you provide" but names none, commercial auto included. The proof must show the name you enrolled with, the expiration date and the vehicle; Spark treats a card in someone else's name, a lapsed policy or a policy summary as invalid. The only coverage the contract says Walmart provides is occupational accident insurance, so for a crash on a trip the contract looks to your own auto policy.

What insurance does Walmart require for Spark drivers?

The requirement sits in the Spark Driver Contract and App Terms of Use, which you sign in the app before accepting offers. The public copy, last updated March 20, 2024, says: "You agree to maintain at least the minimum coverage of automobile liability insurance required by state law in the state(s) in which you provide Services, for any Vehicle you utilize to perform the Services, and any other insurance coverages appropriate for the Services you provide."

So the floor is your state's minimum auto liability; Walmart names no dollar figure of its own. It applies to each vehicle you drive for Spark, and the contract's Vehicle is one "controlled or owned by you," so the car need not be titled to you. Anything beyond liability is left to you and your insurer.

In Utah, Utah Code 31A-22-304 sets that minimum at $30,000 per person, $65,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage, or a $90,000 single limit, for a policy issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025. The contract also requires you to "submit any updated proof of insurance information as it is updated or modified."

Does Spark Driver require proof of insurance?

Yes, before your first delivery and for as long as you drive. Spark's help center lists among the eligibility requirements: "Provide proof of valid auto insurance for the vehicle you'll use, which includes: your name, expiration date, and vehicle information." You upload it in the app once your information has gone to pre-screening, by tapping START under Auto Insurance, and Spark takes .jpg, .png and .pdf files.

Spark's General FAQs add that proof "must be on file for each vehicle you plan to use while using the Spark Driver platform," and that the document "should clearly show the name used during enrollment, the policy expiration date, and the vehicle details." The vehicles the app shows in your account come from that upload: "Vehicle details are displayed based on your uploaded insurance policy." A second car you sometimes deliver in needs its own proof on file before you use it.

Without proof on file the account does not last. The deactivation FAQ says: "Valid, unexpired insurance is required to drive on the Spark Driver platform. If you don't provide proof of insurance, your account will be deactivated."

Do I need commercial auto insurance for Spark Driver?

Walmart's contract does not name it. Beyond state-minimum liability it asks only for "any other insurance coverages appropriate for the Services you provide," which leaves the judgment to you. Spark's documents ask for your name, the expiration date and the vehicle; they do not mention whether the policy permits delivery. An approved upload means Spark accepted the card, not that your insurer has agreed to pay a claim from a Spark trip.

That question is between you and your insurer. The Utah Insurance Department, whose list of examples starts with "Delivery (pizza, newspaper)," says: "If you use your vehicle for any purpose other than driving to work and pleasure use, you may need a commercial auto policy, or you may need to see if your personal auto policy can be endorsed to cover your specific business use."

Tell your personal carrier you deliver for Spark and ask, in writing, whether the policy covers it or can be endorsed to; if not, look at a commercial auto policy for the car. If you go commercial, ask that the ID card show the name you enrolled with: Spark treats a card that "does not list you as the insured person" as invalid, and its help center does not say whether a card in a business name passes.

Does Walmart Spark provide insurance coverage for drivers?

Not auto coverage, in the documents Walmart publishes. The one coverage the Terms of Use say Walmart provides is this: "Walmart will make available to you occupational accident insurance through an appropriate insurance provider." The Terms do not describe what it pays; for an occupational accident claim, the same clause points you to the Spark Driver Support hotline.

The rest of the clause puts the auto side on you: carry the liability insurance, and "notify your insurance carrier of any claims against you relating to your provision of the Services." Spark's delivery FAQ says that after a crash on a trip you contact police or emergency services "and insurance provider if necessary or if required by law," then Driver Support.

We found no statement in the public Terms, the help center or the Spark Driver site that Walmart insures damage you cause on a trip or damage to your own car. If someone says Walmart covers you while the app is on, read the contract you signed, in the app under More, then Settings.

Can I drive for Spark if the insurance is not in my name?

The car can belong to someone else; the card has to show you. The contract's Vehicle is one "controlled or owned by you," but Spark's first example of invalid insurance is "Your insurance card does not list you as the insured person." That example applies whoever owns the car.

Fix it with the insurer: ask whether it can change the policy so your name appears on the ID card, or, with the owner's agreement, put your own policy on the car. Do not edit a card; the Terms of Use prohibit submitting "misleading, false, and/or fraudulent information," insurance cards included.

A name that does not match fails the same way. Spark asks for "a name that matches your driver's license," so get a card printed with a nickname or a former surname corrected before you upload; Spark says contacting Driver Support will not speed up the review.

How do I update my insurance in the Spark Driver app?

From the Home screen, tap More (iOS) or Menu (Android), then Account, Driving Documents, Auto Insurance and Upload. Spark's instruction for that last step is "Tap Upload to upload an image of your valid auto insurance." Do it whenever the policy renews, moves to a new insurer or changes the car; the contract requires updated proof "as it is updated or modified."

If the policy on file has already lapsed, the app says so: "Spark Now will be disabled if your auto insurance has expired." Tap the Needs attention message, upload the current card, then "add the insurance expiration date and tap Submit." The upload then shows as pending verification.

Spark does not publish how long the review takes. It says: "If approved, you will receive confirmation through text and email within 24 hours of acceptance. Your access to Spark Now will be restored within 24 hours of approval." Upload the renewal card as soon as your insurer issues it, before the old expiration date, rather than the day the old one runs out.

Why was my Spark Driver proof of insurance not accepted?

Spark tells you the reason: "If not approved, you'll get an email or text explaining why your documents weren't approved and what next steps you have available." Its deactivation FAQ lists five examples of invalid insurance, and Spark says contacting Driver Support will not speed up the review.

Until the insurance is approved you cannot work: "If we are unable to approve your insurance information, you won't be able to turn on Spark Now."
