The deadline is today

Same day certificate of insurance

Yes, if three things are already true: the policy is bound, whoever issues certificates on it (the agency, or the carrier's portal) has it on file, and the holder is asking only for what the policy already provides. A certificate is a one-page summary; typing one takes minutes. What cannot be done the same day is changing the policy: a scheduled additional insured, a waiver of subrogation, higher limits, or a new line each wait on the carrier, from a day to weeks. Send the request itself and the deadline, and the answer to which case you are in comes back the same hour.

Can I get a certificate of insurance the same day?

A certificate of insurance is a summary of a policy that already exists. The standard form, ACORD 25, says so on its face: it is "issued as a matter of information only and confers no rights upon the certificate holder" and "does not affirmatively or negatively amend, extend or alter the coverage afforded by the policies below." Utah writes the same rule into statute: a certificate "is not an insurance policy and does not affirmatively or negatively amend, extend, or alter the coverage." So the question is never whether the certificate can be produced quickly. It can. The question is whether the policy already provides what the holder's request says the certificate must show.

If the holder wants to be the certificate holder, with its name and address in the box at the bottom, nothing in the policy changes. The agency adds the name and issues. Smart Choice, an aggregator Redoubt places through, puts it plainly: certificate holders do not need to be endorsed and can be added once the policy is bound.

If the holder wants to be an additional insured, or wants subrogation waived, or wants a specific notice period, the policy itself has to carry that. ACORD 25 prints the warning in bold: "If the certificate holder is an ADDITIONAL INSURED, the policy(ies) must have ADDITIONAL INSURED provisions or be endorsed," and "a statement on this certificate does not confer rights to the certificate holder in lieu of such endorsement(s)." When the policy already has a blanket endorsement that grants the status automatically, the certificate can still go out the same day. When it does not, the carrier has to issue an endorsement first, and that is where same day ends.

  • Same day: holder name and address, current dates and limits, a renewal certificate on a renewed policy
  • Same day if a blanket form is on the policy: additional insured, primary and noncontributory, waiver of subrogation
  • Carrier days: a scheduled endorsement naming one party, a mid-term waiver, a notice-to-holder endorsement
  • Weeks: higher limits than the carrier offers, a new line such as umbrella or pollution, a carrier rating floor

How long does a certificate of insurance take?

For a certificate on a policy that already fits, the published figures are hours, not days. Insureon tells its customers that "most businesses receive their ACORD certificate of insurance within a couple of hours of starting a quote," with harder classes "within 48 hours." Next Insurance lets policyholders create their own certificates "24/7 at no additional cost." Progressive Commercial gives the widest range, "within a day or two," and notes that some policies can be served through the online portal. None of those numbers include an endorsement.

For anything that needs the carrier, there is no published turnaround, and the honest answer is that it depends on which endorsement and which carrier. The difference between blanket and scheduled forms is the one the sources describe. An agent writing in Insurance Journal explained that with a blanket endorsement, "insurance agencies can often send out these endorsements without requesting permission from the insurance carriers," which "often makes the blanket endorsements quicker to process." A scheduled endorsement goes to the underwriter. One agency owner described the rule most agencies follow: the only time they do not issue the certificate on the spot is "if it is an endorsement that we know the carrier has to 'review and approve' prior."

Redoubt's own files hold both ends of the range. A certificate on a bound policy with a holder-only request has gone out within the hour. The slow cases were slow for reasons that had nothing to do with typing the form: a wholesale market that does not issue certificates on its policies, an agency without the ACORD tooling to issue its own, and one dealer customer who, in a meeting with a financing partner, had "waited 2+ weeks for a COI on a deal that was otherwise complete." Those are the delays to ask about up front.

Can you get business insurance the same day?

Yes, when the carrier can bind on the application, and the certificate then follows the bind, not the paperwork. General liability can be quoted and bound the same day through an agency or an online carrier when the application is complete and the class is one the carrier writes without underwriter questions. Insureon's "couple of hours" figure counts from "starting a quote," which is a bind-and-certificate timeline, not a certificate-only one.

The step people wait on by mistake is the policy document. A binder is proof the coverage is in force, and the agency can issue a certificate against it. A wholesale underwriter told Redoubt exactly that on a recent placement: once the bind is approved, issue the certificate; there is no need to wait on policy documents. Those documents can trail the bind by about a week with some carriers, and a certificate written on the binder's policy number is not waiting for them.

What makes a same-day bind fail is a question the underwriter cannot answer from the application: a class the carrier does not write, prior claims, a non-standard operation, or a certificate requirement that only surfaces after binding. Carriers ask about that last one at quote. Nationwide's quote form asks whether the insured has "any specific insurance requirements which need to be met (such as loss payees, additional insureds, etc.)" The holder's requirement belongs in the submission, so the policy is bound with the right forms on it rather than endorsed afterward.

  • The legal name of the business exactly as it should print, and the mailing address
  • The holder's exact name and address, copied from their request, not from memory
  • The requirement itself: the contract exhibit, the lender's letter, the broker's packet page, the lease clause
  • The deadline and who is waiting, so the agent can tell you which case you are in

How do I get proof of insurance fast?

Ask whoever issues certificates on your policy: the agency, or the carrier's own portal where the carrier offers one (Next and Progressive Commercial both do), and not a wholesaler. In Redoubt's records, not knowing who issues was the cause of the slowest certificates. When Redoubt placed a policy through a wholesale managing general agent, the MGA's answer to a certificate request was that it does not provide certificates and that they "would need to come directly from the agency office." An agency can only issue if it has ACORD software and the policy in its system. If your agent cannot tell you within the hour who issues certificates on your policy, that is the problem to solve first.

What counts as proof depends on the line: ACORD 25 for liability, ACORD 23 or the lender's own loss payee wording for a vehicle or equipment lender, ACORD 27 or 28 for property. A binder or declarations page proves a policy exists, and some holders accept one while the certificate is prepared, but a reviewer with a checklist wants the certificate with its own name on it.

Do not ask the agent to make the certificate say more than the policy does. The cancellation box on ACORD 25 reads "notice will be delivered in accordance with the policy provisions," and a certificate cannot promise a holder notice the policy does not give. Utah voids a certificate issued in violation of its certificate statute. The fast path is a certificate that reports the policy accurately plus, when the holder needs more, the endorsement that actually grants it.

Can a contractor get insurance and a certificate the same day?

For a Utah license application, yes, once a general liability policy is bound. Utah DOPL's contractor application requires "active general liability insurance with the Utah Division of Professional Licensing listed as the certificate holder." DOPL is a certificate holder, not an additional insured, so once a general liability policy is bound, the certificate with DOPL's name and address can be issued without any endorsement. The holder address DOPL wants has tripped applicants up, and the limits DOPL asks for have changed during 2026, so copy both from the current form on the day you apply. Redoubt's DOPL certificate page covers the current wording.

For a general contractor's subcontract, it depends on the exhibit. Subcontracts routinely ask for the GC as additional insured for ongoing and completed operations, primary and noncontributory wording, and a waiver of subrogation. A policy bound with blanket versions of those forms satisfies all three the same day, because the agency can issue without carrier approval. A policy without them needs scheduled endorsements, and that is a carrier wait. The time to find out is at quote: send the subcontract's insurance exhibit with the application, and ask the agent whether the forms on the quote are blanket or scheduled.

Workers' compensation is the other line a GC checks. An owner with no employees may qualify for a state waiver instead of a policy; in Utah that is a Labor Commission filing with its own processing time. Treat the comp line as its own clock.

What slows a same-day certificate down?

In Redoubt's records, slow certificates were slow for one of six reasons, none of them the time it takes to fill in the form.

  • The policy is not bound yet, and the certificate is being asked for before any policy of that line exists
  • The wholesaler or MGA that wrote the policy does not issue certificates, and the retail agency has not set up to issue its own
  • The holder's request includes an endorsement the policy does not carry, so the carrier has to act first
  • The named insured on the policy does not match the entity on the contract, which is a policy change, not a certificate edit
  • The holder name or address is wrong by a line, as with DOPL's two addresses, and the certificate comes back
  • It is Friday afternoon; in Redoubt's records, carrier and wholesaler endorsement desks have not processed endorsements on weekends

Frequently asked questions

Can an agent issue a certificate before the policy is bound?

No. A certificate reports a policy in force, and issuing one for a policy that does not exist is a false certificate; Utah's statute makes a certificate prepared in violation of it void. A quote or an application is not proof of insurance. Once the bind is approved, the certificate can be issued the same day, before the policy documents arrive.

Does a certificate of insurance cost anything?

Progressive Commercial and Next both say on their own pages that their certificates are free; ask your agency whether it charges, since there is no industry rule. What can cost money is the endorsement behind the certificate, such as a scheduled additional insured or a waiver of subrogation, which the carrier prices.
